The East Coast Championship was the idea of David and Scott Downs, the father and son of the family who established Hunters’ Pointe in Washington, North Carolina. Both being avid shooters and hunters, they wanted to provide an opportunity for a larger scale shoot in eastern North Carolina.  The earliest NSCA records show the first shoot being held in 1996 but some of the folks with  long memories maintain it started several years earlier than that. It was hosted by the Downs family at Hunters’ Pointe until the untimely deaths of both Scott and David Downs. Scott and David's vision is still carried on as the East Coast Championship been hosted by Hunters’ Pointe.
